Obesity is a topic about which everybody is interested to know, how to
control it, what are the causes, what should be the diet and so on.
Obesity can be defined as the excessive accumulation of body fat having a
negative effect on the health of a person. The measurement of Obesity is in terms of BMI (body mass index) which is
calculated by dividing the body weight by the the square of the height
of a person, as Kg/m2.
World health organization (WHO) has established definitions about
obesity which are as given under
A BMI less than 18.5 is underweight
A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is normal weight
A BMI of 25.0–29.9 is overweight
A BMI of 30.0–34.9 is class I obesity
A BMI of 35.0-39.9 is class II obesity
A BMI of > 40.0 is class III obesity or severe / morbidly obese
